Marley & Me

Marley and Me was originally a book written by John Grogan, but was recently made into a movie. Marley and me is a story about a newlywed couple that adopts a golden Labrador. As Marley grew older  he became more mischievous, and even more difficult to handle. Marley destroyed everything in his path for example; couches, curtains, jewelry, and dry wall. Marley shared the couple's happiness at there first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when the babies arrived, and for the screams of the seventeen year old stabbing, and Marley was also there when the beach shut down. Throughout all the struggles the family moves to Pennsylvania for a new job opportunity. Pennsylvania only brings trouble when Marley is diagnosed with arthritis and deafness, and gastric dilatation volvulus twice. The family pays their last respects to the dog before he was buried in their back yard.

Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre is a fiction novel written by Charlotte Bronte in the 1800's. It's a classic story, set in the nineteenth century about a ten-year-old girl named Jane. She is a young orphan being raised by her cruel and wealthy aunt Mrs. Reed. Her aunt locks her in a red room, where she later faints because of the memories of her uncle. The family then agrees to send Jane away, to Lowood boarding school with a hypocritical headmaster Mr. Brocklehurst. She befriends a girl named Helen Burns who dies of typhus epidemic. After six ears of schooling, and two years of teaching Jane accepts a governess position at a manor called Thornfield. While teaching a young French girl, she secretly falls in love with Mr.Rochester her employer. He later asks Jane to marry him and Jane says yes, with complete shock. Days before the wedding, everything is starting to fall apart and Jane finds herself running from Mr.Rochester. She finds comfort, and shelter with her three of her relatives in Moor House. They tell her that she has inherited 20,000 pounds from her uncle John Eyre. St.John asks her to mary him, and move to India. Jane does not want to mary her cousin so she denies his proposal.  Jane realizes that she is still in love with Mr.Rochester and travels to his new residence. They develop their relationship again, and for the second time Jane says yes to the proposal. After ten years of happiness Mr.Rochester regains sight in one eye, and he sees the birth of his newborn baby.

Step 2: What type of comedy is your humor project, why does it meet those criteria?

I created a series of four humorous pictures for the final humour assignment. Each picture has a different meaning but they still follow under the same example of comedy, and that is a comedy of ideas.

The first humorous picture is called Uh Oh, and is all about a female deer making love to a handsome, buff male deer. It falls under the category of comedy of ideas because it talks about things that are dear to us like family, relationships, friends, and religion. Another picture is called Ikea, and it’s called that because it’s a project that is extremely do it yourself. It is also an example of comedy of ideas because a character argues about the idea of doing the whole project from the beginning, and it also mocks what Ikea is all about. I created a humorous picture called On or Off, and it describes what a wife thinks of as an ideal relationship. This is an example of Comedy of ideas because it uses language to mock, and also make fun of things close to us like family, and relationships. My last picture is called I failed, and it mocks all kids because it briefly says how all kids now copy everything from Wikipedia.

My humorous project included comedy of ideas because it is the type of comedy in which I find easiest to write, and talk about.  I find it easier to write about it because it is a topic that I can most relate too in my everyday life. 

Step 3: Reflection

Creating something humorous for people is very entertaining and very amusing to make and think about. During the process of creating something humorous I enjoyed finding ideas, and searching through everybody else’s idea of  humour.  Most comedy found on the internet are examples of farce or low comedy, and I was hoping to find more examples of  comedy of ideas for my project.

When I finished researching I found it rather easy to think of different ideas, and different examples of comedy to do for this project. I completed the written part fairly quickly, but finding pictures to fit the joke was very hard. I struggled to find the perfect picture for each joke, and to make the pictures match and look well together.

English Humour Unit: Book summary

What type of comedy is your book?

My humour book is Me talk pretty one day by David Sedaris, I found this book through Oprah’s website along with many other humorous novels but I chose David’s because of his title. This novel includes many different types of comedy but I enjoyed it the most when he used low comedy. Throughout the book David Sedaris gives many example of low comedy whether it’s when he lives in North Carolina or in France. One of my favourite essays that he wrote within the book would be the one about him learning guitar for the first time.  It was when he was a young boy living in North Carolina, and his mom forced him into taking unwanted guitar lessons from a midget. Throughout the essay David continuously refers back to the fact that his teacher is a midget, and makes many jokes about his physical deformities. This was one of my favourite essays because it involved low comedy, and slapstick humour. This book comprises of twenty-eight different essays, and I found almost every single one of them to be entertaining, witty, and very humorous.

Is it funny?

I found the novel to be hilarious and entertaining, but it depends on what type of comedy, and writing style you enjoy most. This particular book includes lots of low comedy, and comedy of manners, and if that’s not the type of comedy you enjoy I would not recommend this book to you. Me talk pretty one day includes multiple different essays comprised of stories, and events throughout David Sedaris’s life time and I enjoy that type of writing style so I enjoyed the book even more. His stories were full of jokes, and exaggerated sentences like when he decided to move to France and he arrived as a “spooky man-child”. While he was there he found a group of men playing soccer with a cow. He also enjoyed many translated movies since he didn’t know how to speak the language, he also found himself describing the Easter bunny to many puzzled classmates! Whether he was describing his childhood, or his manhood the book is full of comedy!

Video:

My video is an SNL parody on a Pantene commercial. It is a parody because they ridicule almost all Pantene commercials, and the video is also an example of exaggeration because they exaggerate each line. SNL did a great job on this parody and I find it very funny because they took the video to new extremes, and really did a great job exaggerating the commercial.

Article:

This article is satire because it explains how all Doctors are idiots and full of nonsense! It is an example of a Reversal because they present the opposite of the truth, and it also can be an example of exaggeration because they exaggerate what all doctors say and do. This article is pretty  funny because it’s really reversing the truth by talking about how doctors don’t know what they’re talking about, and how they encourage smoking while having a baby.

Kinye Karwest

Kim Kardashian shoots for the stars as she arrives at the 72 day of her marriage with Kanye west. Kanye admits that this marriage will last at least 100 days because he just completed a song with Bieber. Kim has come into this marriage prepared because she has divorce lawyer at hand, and she is ready to start digging. Her family is hoping the million dollar marriage will not be going Kanye “south”. The family shows all their support through their helpful tweets to Kim. Kanye promises to never give up on Kim and to help reach her World record of a 73 day marriage. He also promised her a 19 million dollar party once they hit the 73 day mark.
