Migrant Experience

Traveling to California was definitely not a dream for me but it was the only choice I had. Upon my arrival I was one of few who made it across the California border. Once I crossed it, I went through many troubles trying to find a job. In California there were too many people and not enough jobs. Once I found employment, I learned that the amount of workers wanting jobs put a major decrease in all job salaries. My salary was definitely not enough to live a steady lifestyle neither was it enough to keep me above the poverty line. I was forced to set up camp along one of the irrigation ditches! That’s when they opened up the Arvin Migratory Labor Camp; this camp gave the citizens a clean place to stay. It only got better from there because the Second World War started the economy improved drastically.
